- Tensions under Trump
The large-scale departure of lawyers from the Department of Justice could have lasting effects on its operations, weakening its capacity in key areas.
Since President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office, the Department of Justice has faced significant scrutiny.
Criticism has focused on a lack of transparency in files linked to Jeffrey Epstein, according to USA Today.

The department has also been accused of being used as a political tool against opponents and critics.
However, another issue is advancing with less attention but deep consequences.
It is the departure of thousands of experienced lawyers within the institution.

More than 3,300 lawyers have left the Department of Justice from the start of Trump’s term through February 2026.
The data comes from the Office of Personnel Management.
In contrast, only around 800 lawyers have been hired during the same period.

The gap reflects a significant loss of human capital.
Many of those who left had decades of experience across various areas.
Former department attorneys warn that the impact could be long-lasting.
They say institutional capacity could be compromised for years.
Former officials describe internal environment
Stacey Young, a former senior attorney with 18 years at the Department of Justice, described a troubling environment.
She worked in the Civil Division and later in the Civil Rights Division.
Young left her position just days after the new administration began.
“When political leaders come into the department and immediately start acting like tyrants, and purging the people who know how to run things, that is going to have a really destabilizing effect—and it certainly has,” she said.
After leaving, she founded Justice Connection.
The organization supports those who have resigned from their positions.
It also aims to counter what it sees as threats to the rule of law under the Trump administration.
Impact on key areas and government response
Former officials argue that the steady loss of lawyers has weakened essential functions.
These include enforcement of tax law.
They also point to efforts against drug trafficking.
White-collar crime, national security, and environmental protection are also affected.
Civil rights enforcement may also be impacted.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration defends its record.
It highlights a stronger focus on immigration enforcement.
A spokesperson pointed to achievements in public safety.
“Our country has the lowest homicide rate in 125 years, we have arrested more than 90 key cartel leaders, and removed millions of lethal doses of fentanyl from our streets, all while achieving a record 24 favorable rulings in the Supreme Court,” said Baldassarre.
From the White House, the position remains firm.
“President Trump will not hesitate to lawfully implement the agenda he was elected on,” said spokesperson Abigail Jackson.
The contrast between internal criticism and official defense reflects ongoing tension.
The future of the US Department of Justice will depend on how this structural crisis is managed.
